Spotless Takes a Stand on New Political Anthem, “Murder”

Critics often complain about the lack of social activism in Nigerian music. For a country so enamoured with easily digestible, commercial content, it’s hard not to sympathise somewhat with artists who choose not to dabble in social commentary. The few artists who are consistently successful in making good ‘political’ records are often required to cut a fine balance in ensuring that the records are danceable, in addition to being conscious. That way, satisfying both the listener who thinks music should say something meaningful, and the otherwise indifferent.

Spotless’ “Murder” is a song with a message, as the artist hearkens to sentiments shared by some of the greatest musical activists in recent memory, including Fela, Lucky Dube and Bob Marley. On the song, the artist touches a number of topics including wanton violence, delinquency, poverty, and many others; calling for a change in attitude by the government and larger society. You would be forgiven for getting lost in the song’s undeniable groove, but its message is not to be taken lightly.

Four South African police officers arrested over gruesome murder of Nigerian man, Pius Ezekwem

The South African government have arrested four police officers over the gruesome murder of  a Nigerian businessman residing in their country, Pius Ezekwem.

3 Vigilante members arrested over the gruesome murder of a 24-year old 400 level student of Olabisi Onabanjo University

Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three members of a local vigilante group in Ijebu-Igbo, popularly known as “Yaluwon” over the gruesome murder of a 24-year old 400 level student of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP, Abimbola Oyeyemi in a press statement said the suspects, Idowu Ayodele a.k.a Olori Odo, Segun Ogunbanwo Kikisore and Salisu Akeem were arrested following a petition written to the Commissioner of Police by the father of the victim, one Surakat Obisanwo who complained that his son, Ahmed Obisanwo and one of his friends were arrested on the 8th of August, 2019 at Ijebu-Igbo by the local security outfit on allegation that the two friends were members of Eiye cult group.

Obisanwo further stated in his petition that the security men claimed that they were taken the arrested victims to Ijebu-Igbo Police Station but the enquiry made at the police station revealed that the boys were never taken there and since then the where about of his son had been unknown.

On the strength of the petition, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bashir Makama directed the anti-cultist section to investigate and unravel the mystery behind the disappearance of the victim.

The statement stated further that the team embarked on technical and forensic investigation through which they discovered that the two boys were never at any time taken to the police station but that instead, the security men released one of them and killed the other one who happened to be the son of the petitioner.

After killing him, they stripped his corpse naked before throwing it into Osun river for it to flow freely into the lagoon. Recovered from them are: four locally made double barrel guns, 10 live cartridges, one iron axe, one native dagger and one jacket with security inscription on it.

South African man sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his ex-lover laughed and mocked her family during court appearances

A 44-year-old Soweto man who shot and killed his ex-lover has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder.

Hector Sipho Mdletshe was sentenced to life imprisonment today, for murdering Nomsa Hilda Mbuyisa in broad daylight at taxi rank in Soweto last year. He was also sentenced to five years in prison for the attempt to murder Alfred Mbuyisa and five years for attempting to murder his own son, Mthunzi Mbuyisa.

In handing the sentence, Judge Tony Thobane said Mdletshe showed no remorse or emotion except indifference in the death and fallout. He said it was not surprising because he planned the murder and executed it.

“Mr Mdletshe it is aggravating that you killed Nomsa in cold blood in full view of the public. Her life was taken needlessly and you’ve shown no remorse. Society must be rid of the likes of you who are perpetrators of extreme violence and are a menace. I am unable to record any mitigating circumstances. It is also aggravating that you tried to kill Alfred Mbuyisa and your own son Mthunzi Mbuyisa,” Thobane said.

The brother of Nomsa told the court on Tuesday, how the man laughed at them during his court appearances.

Mbuyisa’s brother Themba Mazibuko told the court through an affidavit that even after Mdletshe was arrested for the murder, he and his family would swear at them and mock them during court proceedings.

“We had to stay in the same house with Sipho’s family before and after the funeral. They showed us no respect even in our time of mourning. They acted as if Nomsa did not do anything for them when she was alive,” Mazibuko said.

Mazibuko said this through a victim impact statement that was read into the record by prosecutor Deborah Zinn on Tuesday,  in the South Gauteng High Court, sitting in the Palm Ridge magistrate’s court.

The report was presented in court to illustrate the impact of Mdletshe’s actions in killing Mbuyisa.

“His [Mdletshe’s] family did not want to move out of Nomsa’s house, they vandalised it. They pulled out all the electricity cables and broke the pipes. The house was left flooded with water,” he said.

The prosecutor told the court Mdletshe had three previous convictions – in 1997, 2000 and 2003.

“He was convicted for pointing a firearm at someone in 1997 but was given a fine and a suspended sentence. He was also convicted of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in 2000. He was also found guilty of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm in 2003,” Zinn said.

US rapper Lil Dell, 19, on the run after being charged with murder

A young American rapper is reportedly on the run after he was charged with first-degree murder.

19-year-old Florida rapper Lil Dell, whose real name is Cordellious Dyess, is among three other suspects charged with the murder of 20-year-old Elizabeth Harris, who was shot outside of a Pensacola nightclub in May 2019.

They were said to have fired more than 40 shots into a crowd in a parking lot near the Platinum Night Club in Pensacola, Fla., according to ABC 3.

Lil Dell and his three friends intended to hit rival gang members but struck innocent bystander Elizabeth Harris, who died at the hospital later that night.

The three other teenagers: Markeasia James, 17, Tequan Warren, 18, and Dante Walker, 19, were arrested in connection with the murder last week. Walker has been charged with accessory to murder, and Warren and James face charges including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated assault.

According to ABC 3, authorities are still looking for Lil Dell.

Speaking on the situation, the victim’s younger sister Vallie Harris told ABC 3 that she knew the suspects personally.

“It’s sad because I grew up with these people. I went to school with them. I seen these people every day,” Vallie said. “Now when I think about it, I have to think these people did this to my sister.”

As for Harris’ mother, Tawanna Campbell, she feels like throwing these kids in jail will only create more damage.

“It’s not gonna solve anything…. I want my baby and I can’t get her back, you know?” said Tawanna Campbell, Elizabeth’s mother. “It’s a lose-lose situation. These children have lost their lives, my daughter has lost her life and they’re gonna lose family. I’ve lost my family. It’s just too much.”

Murder of Three Policemen by Soldiers: Where is Hamisu Wadume, the millionaire kidnapper we arrested

The Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army are currently at loggerheads after the police accused soldiers of killing three of their personnel while freeing a kidnap suspect in Taraba state. (Read HERE)

The Nigerian army in its response admitted that its men killed three police operatives and a civilian in Taraba, but said the men were mistaken for kidnappers. (Read HERE)

Now, the Nigerian Police Force have issued another statement saying, ‘its insensitive, disrespectful and unpatriotic for the Army to continue to describe Policemen on lawful National Assignment as ‘suspected kidnappers’ long after it had become crystal clear to the Army that these are Law Enforcement Officers who unfortunately were gruesomely murdered in the line of duty by Nigerian soldiers attached to 93 Battalion, Takum’.

See the full statement below…

The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to the Press Release by the Nigerian Army dated 07 August, 2019, seeking to justify the unprovoked and unwarranted murder of three (3) Police officers and one (1) Civilian, and serious injury to other operatives, who were on legitimate criminal investigation activities to Taraba State, to arrest one Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume indicted in a series of high-profile kidnap incidents in the State.

In the best tradition of Esprit de Corps, Inter-Agency Harmony and National Interest, the Nigeria Police Force would naturally have kept quiet, but it has become imperative to set the record straight by addressing the obvious distortion of facts inherent in the Press Release by the Nigerian Army.

The most important question arising from the Nigerian Army Press Release is: Where is Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume? Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume is a millionaire kidnapper arrested by the Police but paradoxically treated as a ‘‘kidnap victim’’ by the Soldiers and subsequently ‘rescued’ by them. Where is he? Where is the rescued kidnapper?

Secondly, the Press Release was silent on the source of the alleged distress report or identity of the complainant, on the strength of whose report, the Army claimed had informed their decision to engage in the purported chase and rescue operation.

Needless to state that in the true spirit of transparency and accountability, the Nigerian Army ought to have arrested the purported distress caller – if any – for obviously and deliberately furnishing them with false and misleading information. Besides, such arrest should in fact be made public!

Thirdly, it is not true that the Policemen failed to identify themselves as alleged in the Press Release. The video on the incident, now viral, wherein the voice of one of the soldiers was heard loudly proclaiming that the Policemen were from the Force Headquarters, Abuja speaks volume.

Besides, the presence of the IRT personnel was well known to the Taraba Police Command as the Operatives officially and properly documented not only at the State Command Headquarters but also at the Wukari Area Command and the Ibi Divisional Headquarters. As a matter of fact, some of the Detectives from the Taraba State Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were part of the operation.

The Force also considers it insensitive, disrespectful and unpatriotic for the Press Release by the Army to continue to describe Policemen on lawful National Assignment as ‘suspected kidnappers’ long after it had become crystal clear to the Army that these are Law Enforcement Officers who unfortunately were gruesomely murdered in the line of duty by Nigerian soldiers attached to 93 Battalion, Takum.

In the final analysis, we leave the Nigerian Army authorities to provide Nigerians with answers on the following questions emanating from their Press Release:

· Where is the notorious kidnapper, Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume ‘rescued’ by the soldiers?

· How and why was Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume released by the soldiers?

· How could a kidnap suspect properly restrained with handcuffs by the Police escape from the hands of his military rescuers?

· If Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume is a ‘‘victim of kidnap’’ as claimed, and properly rescued by soldiers, why was he not taken to the Army Base for documentation purposes and debriefing in line with the Standard Operating Procedure in the Nigerian Army?

· Why were the Police Operatives shot at close range even after they had identified themselves as Police Officers on legitimate duty as evident in the video now in circulation?

UK jails Nigeria’s Ajibola Shogbamimu for 17 years over the murder of missing midwifery student, Joy Morgan

Ajibola Shogbamimu the Nigerian man otherwise known as Shohfah-El Israel has been sentenced by a UK court to a minimum 17 years for the murder of missing midwifery student Joy Morgan.

Shohfah-El Israel was convicted by a jury at Reading Crown Court of killing Ms Morgan after spending time alone with her against strict church rules in December.

The 20-year-old’s body has never been recovered, despite extensive police searches of hundreds of acres of land in Hertfordshire, Kilburn Times reported  Passing sentence this afternoon Judge Michael Soole said:

“Only you know the circumstances of your terrible deed and why you did it. You are evidently an intelligent man and have said nothing beyond the lies and the explanations which the jury has rejected.

“The court has heard the most moving personal statement from Joy’s mother Carol Morgan, which speaks of Joy’s warm, loving and caring personality and character. On top of all this must be the very particular and continuing distress and suffering which flows from your cruel and cowardly silence about Joy Morgan’s final resting place.

“I am only too conscious that no sentence of the Court can palliate the loss and grief for Mrs Morgan and the wider family.”

The court heard Israel lied to the police when he was arrested, saying he had dropped Ms Morgan off at her student accommodation in Hatfield after a celebratory dinner at the American-founded Israel United in Christ Church they attended in Ilford, east London, on December 26.

He later admitted he had in fact spent two nights alone with the University of Hertfordshire student in his Cricklewood flat, but claimed his lies were due to concerns about having broken church rules banning women from being alone with men other than their husbands.

After killing Ms Morgan, he attempted to cover his tracks by removing her number from a church Telegram group chat, the court heard, and even kept up the pretence by going to her student house share under the guise of checking on her in the days after she apparently went missing. A signal from Ms Morgan’s phone, which has never been found, was detected in Israel’s car in the Stevenage area on December 28, at which point the jury was told he was most likely “looking for somewhere to dispose of the body”.

Do you have the guts to stand up to the NRA and ban the weapons of mass murder or are you a spineless coward?

Piers Morgan has written a new article in response to last weekend’s mass shootings in the United States that killed over 30 people.

Morgan in his piece called on President Trump to stand up to the NRAbullies and ban the weapons of mass murder or forever be known as a spineless coward.

President Trump said a lot of good things today in his statement following the horrific weekend of gun carnage in America.

Displaying a rare and welcome empathetic tone, he unequivocally condemned white supremacists, denounced hate, racism and bigotry, used the phrase ‘domestic terrorism’ for those who commit such atrocities, criticized violent video games, demanded immediate tougher action to stop the radicalization of people on the internet, and called for bi-partisan solutions to gun violence and for Americans to come together.

All of this is to be applauded. But what the President didn’t talk about is the one thing that actually caused the deaths and injuries to more than 80 people in El Paso and Dayton: GUNS. Oh he mentioned them, but only to absolve them of any responsibility.

‘Mental illness and hatred pulls the trigger not the gun,’ Trump said.

And that is true. But it is guns, and the bullets fired from them, that do the actual killing. If mentally sick or hateful people don’t have guns, they can’t shoot people.

That’s why mentally sick and hateful people don’t shoot anyone in Japan, which has a greater obsession with violent video games than anywhere but no mass shootings they can’t get their hands on guns.

That’s also why, when 16 school children were shot dead in Britain in the Dunblane massacre of 1996, we banned virtually all guns from civilian hands and haven’t, thank God, suffered a school shooting since then.

Yet in America, you can legally arm yourself like Rambo. And when 20 schoolchildren were shot dead in a US classroom in Sandy Hook in 2012, nothing was done to stop it happening again and there have been over 240 school shootings in America since that day.

So let’s cut all the crap: it’s about the guns. Many other countries have the same kind of mental illness, hate, bigotry, white supremacy, violent video games and internet radicalization that Trump referenced.

But only America offers such easy access to guns. THAT’S the difference, and that’s why America has more gun violence and gun deaths than the next 23 developed countries combined. The 24-year-old Dayton shooter Connor Betts used an AK-47 style semi-automatic assault rifle with a 100-bullet magazine.

All of it apparently bought legally, despite the fact. Betts was reportedly suspended twice from high school after drawing up a ‘kill list’ for boys and a ‘rape list’ for girls.

He was dressed and armed for a battlefield, yet able to bring war to the streets of Ohio.

Betts was shot dead by police 24 SECONDS after he fired his first shot, yet still managed to kill 9 people and wound 27. That shows you both the devastating speed and power of these weapons, and the futility of relying on ‘good guys with guns’ to stop such horror happening.

The El Paso shooter Patrick Crusius, 21, also used an AK-47 style assault rifle, and had numerous high-capacity magazines, all also bought legally. He was able to kill at least 20 people and wound 26 at a Walmart store before police detained him.

My brother is a British Amy Colonel and can’t believe civilians are allowed to use such high-powered guns. ‘They have one purpose,’ he told me, ‘and that’s to kill lots of human beings as fast as possible.’ Yes, and that’s why they have been used in almost every one of America’s 20 worst gun massacres.

Yet still they are legal.

No hunter or sportsman with any pride needs one, and no homeowner needs one to defend themselves. When I pressed Trump, during our recent interview in London during his UK state visit, about why civilians need semi-automatic rifles, he said some use them for ‘entertainment’.

The only other reason I’ve ever been given was from a Houston restaurant worker who told me he used an AR-15 rifle to shoot packs of crop-destroying wild hogs from helicopters because ‘you can kill a lot of them at once’.

So that’s it?

These military weapons have to be made available to American civilians for entertainment and hog culling? Well sorry America, it’s time you found another way to get your kicks and slay pigs. It’s also time America stopped its ridiculous veneration of guns generally.

After the El Paso shooting, Texas Governor Greg Abbott was quick to appear in public offering his thoughts and prayers. This is the same Greg Abbott who on October 28, 2015, ten months after he took office, tweeted a link to a story in the Houston Chronicle that revealed Texans had made over 1 million requests to buy guns that year, with two months of the year still left.

Abbott was unhappy. Not that so many new guns would be flooding his state, but that not enough would be doing so.

‘I’m EMBARRASSED,’ he tweeted, ‘Texas #2 in nation for new gun purchases, behind CALIFORNIA. Let’s pick up the pace Texans.’

He copied in the NRA to his plea, presumably so they could help facilitate the faster gun sales he wanted to spare his shame. Abbott has an A+ NRA rating, the highest ‘accolade’ it gives to gun-friendly politicians. And they recently thanked him for signing all ten NRA-supported pieces of legislation sent to him during the past session of Texas legislature.

Texas has some of the weakest gun laws in America. No state permit, registration or owner license is required to purchase a firearm, and there is no background check required for private sales. It is also an ‘open carry’ state, so you can carry your gun around with you like you would your cell phone.

In fact, in Texas, it is legal to carry a long firearm (rifle) without a license, which is what the El Paso shooter did. Governor Abbott said he was ‘shocked’ by what happened.

Really, Governor? How shocked can you be when you’ve literally begged people to buy more guns, and made it so easy for anyone – however disturbed their mind may be – to do so?

The most staggering thing about America’s gun culture is that even the country’s supposedly smartest minds don’t seem to understand how insane it is.

Acclaimed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson decided that perspective was required. ‘In the past 48 hours, the USA horrifically lost 34 people to mass shootings,’ he tweeted. ‘On overage, across any 48 hours, we also lose… 50 to Medical errors, 300 to the Flu, 250 to Suicide, 200 to Car Accidents, 40 to Homicide via Handgun. Often our emotions respond more to spectacle than to data.’

I had to read this ridiculous whataboutery, for which he has now apologized, several times to fully comprehend its spectacular tone-deaf awfulness. When someone like deGrasse Tyron instinctively decides this is the best way to respond to two of the worst gun massacres in modern U.S. history, I truly despair.

America’s had 249 mass shootings in 2019, and it’s only August.

On average, 100,000 people every year are hit by gunfire in the U.S., of which 32,000 die. To offer some of Neil deGrasse Tyson’s ‘perspective’, just 32 people die from guns in the UK each year.

We have our own issue with knife crime, for sure, but the casualty levels are not in the same stratosphere as US gun violence statistics (more people will be shot dead in America this week than were stabbed to death in Britain last year).

So America has a uniquely terrible romance with guns that is now exploding into a never-ending series of grotesque massacres as the weaponry grows ever more powerful.

And nobody, least of all the President, seems inclined to do anything about the main cause of the violence.

Curiously, Trump began the day tweeting that ‘Republicans and Democrats must come together and get strong background checks’, then crassly and inappropriately added, ‘perhaps marrying this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform.’

(So you’d give the El Paso shooter exactly what he wanted, Mr President – REALLY?’)

But by the time he got to the White House podium 3 hours later, he didn’t mention even this small but significant new gun law proposal, despite it being one that not only 90% of Americans support but also the vast majority of Republicans.

I suspect he was bullied into dropping it by the NRA, which still has Trump in its pocket after supporting him at the 2016 election, when they read his tweet.

If so, then it’s hard to imagine anything more spineless.

All the eloquent words in the world won’t change a damn thing, Mr President, if you continue to allow yourself to be pushed around by a bunch of gun-toting maniacs whose sole interest is in selling more guns and making billions of dollars in profit.

These mass shootings have to stop, and the best way to start the process is to stop those committing them from being able to buy their tools of their terror.

So it’s time you grew a pair President Trump, stand up to the NRA and do what REALLY needs to be done.

As you said today, you banned bump fire stock after the Las Vegas massacre.

Now you must go much further.

That means a ban on assault weapons, a ban on high-capacity magazines, and the introduction of mandatory background checks on all gun purchases.

Do it now, or stand condemned as a coward.
