Senator Shekarau slams Governor Wike over mosque demolition and declaring Rivers state a Christian state

Senator Ibrahim Shekarau on Friday August 30, slammed Governor Nyesom Wike over the demolition of a mosque in Port Harcourt and declaring Rivers State which he governs a Christian state.

Though the Rivers state government denied carrying out the demolition, the former Kano State Governor and Senator Representing Kano Central Senatorial District called on all right-thinking Nigerians to condemn the act which he described as “reckless”.

He said “All rationale and conscious citizens of this great country, Nigeria should join in condemning the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike for recklessly demolishing the Rainbow Town Central Mosque located at the Trans-Amadi Area of Port Harcourt and for irresponsibly declaring Rivers State a “Christian State,” and claiming to owe no apology to anyone.

“Muslims and other right-thinking and peace-loving citizens of this country should come together to condemn, in strongest terms, this irresponsible, reckless, rabble-rousing Governor whose apparent aim is to ignite a religious conflagration, the kind of which has never been seen in recent times.

“If a Muslim Governor were to come out openly and declare his state a “Muslim State” and proceed to demolish a church for any reason, all hell would have since broken loose in Nigeria, and sections of the Christian community would have since rushed to the “international community” and even the United Nations seeking protection against Muslims.

“The action of Governor Wike is a pointer to his being induced by other than rationale brain waves, as no leader in his right senses would contemplate stoking these embers of discord in a country so religiously, ethnically and regionally charged as Nigeria.

“We must repeat that were a Muslim Governor to be reckless to utter even half of what Governor Wike uttered, the fragile peace holding in this country would have since been jeopardized because of the intolerant nature of a section of the citizenry.

“Yet here we are, with the added tragedy of a cohort Christian clergy lining up to bless and endorse Governor Wike’s action.”

Senator Shekarau added that Nigeria belongs to everyone and no state in Nigeria can claim to be mono-religious. He went on to name some Rivers State indigenes who are Muslims.

“Nigeria belongs to all, and no state in Nigeria could claim to be mono religious.

“It only takes a responsible leadership to carry everybody along. When I held sway as governor of Kano State between 2003 and 2011, we encouraged and guided the people to lead their lives according to the tenets of Islamic Law (Shari’ah).

”But we neither became power-drunk to demolish Churches nor disregarded the provisions of section 10 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to declare Kano an Islamic State.

“Our fair dealings with every section of the community earned us commendation, even from Kano State Chapter and National Body of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at different occasions. These Christian leaders are a still alive today to attest to my claim.

“It may interest Wike to learn that Mr. Tala Ilo from Bayelsa State and Mr. Chris Chibuzor Azuka from Anambra State, (both, born-again Christians) were special advisers in my administration.

“Wike’s claim that Rivers is a Christian State is pathological lies. It suggests that not only are the people of Rivers State 100% Christians but Muslims and adherents of other religions from other parts of Nigeria cannot make Rivers State their home.

” It also insinuates that Rivers State operates a government, a constitution of its own, different from the Nigerian Nation.

“It means Rivers State does not recognize or protect the interests of people like Alabo Mujahid Dokubo Asari, Alhaji Isa Boaima, Alhaji Sani Okiri, Alhaji Ahmed Sani Pe, Alhaji Abdul’aziz Pepple, Alhaji Sulaiman Akani, Alhaji Ibrahim Orlu, Alhaji Musa Brown, Chief Hassan Douglas and Alhaji Mustapha Wakama who are all Muslims and productive citizens of Rivers State” he wrote.

Nigerians stage protest at the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria over xenophobic attacks

Nigerians in South Africa stormed the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, to protest xenophobic attacks directed at them in South Africa.

The protesters, mostly made up of victims of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, said on Thursday, August 29, that they are angered by the recent massive looting of foreign-owned shops in the city by some South Africans.

They complained that they lost properties and business investments when South Africans carried out an attack on foreigners on Wednesday, August 28, at Pretoria business district.

South African indigenes carried out the attack in anger after a taxi operator was killed by a yet-to-be-identified man. During the attack, they resorted to looting shops owned by foreigners in their country and mostly Nigerians were the ones affected by this.

The Nigerians affected said they no longer feel safe in South Africa and accused the Nigerian representatives in South Africa of being slow in responding to their plight.

However, Defence Adviser, Nigerian High Commission in South Africa, Abubakar Mustapha, condemned the protesters for venting anger on the commission by destroying some properties.

“The way they went about it was quite unfortunate, they scaled the fence and almost destroyed the gate,” Mustapha said.

Nigeria High Commission officers later visited the scenes of the looting to see the level of damage done on businesses owned by Nigerians.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Rabiu Ladodo, and SSG confirmed the incident to newsmen at a joint news briefing in Owerri. According to PM News, the commisionner announced that a citizen’s arrest had been declared on Okorocha over the incident. They claimed that Okorocha hired thugs to attack Ndubuaku, who doubles as Special Adviser to Gov. Emeka Ihedioha on Security matters. They said that the Senator representing Imo West would be arrested and prosecuted anytime he enters the state.

This is happening barely 24 hours after traditional rulers in the state issued a stern warning to Okorocha against disrupting the activities of the recovery team. The commissioner of police said that police would investigate the senator’s involvement in the matter.

Narrating his ordeal, Ndubuaku alleged that he was beaten at Okorocha’s residence and thrown into a gutter by some thugs. He further alleged that he was first held hostage for some hours by the thugs in the presence of security men attached to Okorocha’s residence. He said that the recovery team obtained a court order to search Okorocha’s house.

“We got a court order to recover stolen properties kept in Okorocha’s house and when we got to his house on Thursday, armed thugs attacked us.

There are twenty government vehicles in his house, four Speed Boats, one movable Crain and generator sets, which we went to recover before the incident. “We will not give up the battle, we will go back to his house because the property belongs to Imo government,” Ndubuaku said.

Mr Sam Onwuemeodo, the Special Assistant on Media to Okorocha, however said the recovery committee was attacked by the former governor’s sympathisers and passersby. He said that the recovery team went to Okorocha’s house without a court order, adding that they invaded Okorocha’s residence with no fewer than 50 thugs.

Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three members of a local vigilante group in Ijebu-Igbo, popularly known as “Yaluwon” over the gruesome murder of a 24-year old 400 level student of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU.

Pensioner, 69, shoots dead childhood bully during school reunion held over 50 years after they graduated (photos)

A man is wanted by police after he took revenge on another man who bullied him when they were both students over 50 years ago.

Thanapat Anakesri, 69, a pensioner, shot dead Suthat Kosayamat, 69, during their school reunion. He accused Suthat of bullying him when they were both 16.

Both men had attended the reunion on Saturday afternoon in Ang Thong, central Thailand. As the group sat down to enjoy wine, a buffet of Thai food and ice cream, former navy officer Thanapat confronted his former tormentor and accused him of bullying him decades ago. But Suthat, a tailor, said he could not remember there being a problem between the pair. Thanapat demanded an apology from Suthat but he refused. Thanapat is accused of then pulling out a handgun with which he allegedly shot his former classmate before fleeing the room.

Suthat was rushed to hospital but later pronounced dead by doctors.

Tuean Klakang, 69, who organised the event, told police in Thailand that the alleged killer had complained in the past about the school bullying but said he did not believe it was such a serious issue.

Tuean told local media: “Thanapat would get drunk then often talk about how angry he was about being bullied by Suthat. He never forgot about it. But as these things happened such a long time ago, I would never have imagined that he would have killed his friend like this. We are all shocked by it.”

Suthat was given a traditional Buddhist funeral on Monday, August 26. Devastated friends and relatives paid tribute to the “caring and kind” man.

Police are now searching for Thanapat, who they believe is living in a neighbouring province in Thailand.
