Akwa Ibom Speaker, Onofiok Luke, who reacted to the defection of Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, has alleged that he was offered N2 billion and the deputy governorship slot to dump the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The Akwa Ibom Speaker who disclosed that he would rather quit politics than defect to the APC during a solidarity rally for the State Governor, Udom Emmanuel and Senator from the state, Bassey Albert in Uyo, the state capital, added that Akpabio’s action was borne out of personal interest.
Luke who insisted that the defection was aimed at grabbing and sharing power, said;
“They said the President had sent words for me to become the deputy governor. They offered me N2bn, but I said no. If you like, offer me N10bn, mine is no.
“They have no plan for us and no plans for the future of our state. It was all about them. It was only about power grabbing and power-sharing, but by God’s amazing grace, we will overcome them.”
This is coming few hours after the elders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom, described the former governor of the state, Godswill Akpabio, as a huge financial burden to the state government. The elders under the aegis of Akwa Ibom Elders Vanguard said Akpabio’s excessive demands from Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration had ended with his exit from the party.
Addressing journalists in Uyo, the leader of the group, Senator Anietie Okon, said Akpabio’s defection would allow Governor Udom to focus on the development of the state with steady financial resources instead of distraction from the ex-governor.
The elders, who were accompanied by Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, Obong Bassey Inuaeyen, Hon. Ndueson Essien Dr. Emmanuel Ukpong among others, also accused Akpabio of hypocrisy by making negative comments against Governor Udom.
A gas explosion which occurred yesterday at Okwe community in Asaba, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, reportedly claimed the lives of a lady and four kids.
Two other kids that were in her store to buy some items were also consumed by the fire. The gas explosion which occurred at the popular Okwe Market, reportedly killed the victims on the spot and left many others injured with varied decrees of injuries. The deceased have been identified as a 4-month old baby, her 3-year old sister and their mother, as well as two teenagers.
According to Saturday Telegraph, a provision store owner, was cooking with a stove when fire gushed into the kiosk through a gas leakage at the nearby gas refilling store and consumed them.
An eyewitness said: “At 4pm on Thursday, we saw her cooking with stove at the front of her shop, within a twinkle of an eye, a gas cylinder exploded and threw itself to where the woman was cooking.
“The fire gutted the shop. When the woman realised that her two kids were inside the shop, she ran inside to rescue them but unfortunately the fire caught her inside with two other kids that came to buy items.” Before the arrival of men of the state’s fire service to put out the fire, the children were already dead.
Another source claimed that the woman whose identity could not be ascertained, was burnt while trying to rescue her two kids. They were said to have been burnt beyond recognition before men of the Delta State Fire Service arrived the scene.
“The two kids died on the spot but the mother and other two kids who came to buy goods at the provision shop were quickly rushed to Okwe General Hospital in a critical condition but were also confirmed dead on Friday”, the source added.
Their corpses were said to have been deposited at a morgue in the area.
A woman identified as Veronica, who got married to Mr. James Hon (now late) from Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue state at the age of 19, has been accused of sleeping with her son which the marriage produced.
The lady is said to have gotten remarried, after she got into a love relationship with Sebastian Iorshe, a Tiv man from the area who lost his wife after two months of marriage in 1988. The marriage however ran into a big storm, when it repeatedly failed to produce a child or children to cement the relationship. Matters were not helped much with Veronica’s movement into the second marriage with her only son, Simon, now 26-years-old. Sebastian’s mother who was not happy over the couple’s inability to produce children, was said to regularly accuse Veronica of using her son’s wealth to train up her own son.
Amidst the accusations and counter-accusations created by this development, Sun reported that the couple neglected to go for a medical check up to ascertain the source of the problem. Veronica blamed her husband, addding that while she was willing, her husband was not. She said she suspects that her husband, said to be suffering from low sperm count, had, all along, known that he is unable to father a child.
Veronica who decided to test her own virility or potency by luring her son into secret lovemaking (with a stem warning not to reveal the affair to anybody). Investigation by Saturday Sun reveals that the serial lovemaking session lasted throughout the month of March and April 2018. Each time Veronica came down to Lafia with her son to deliver dry meat to restaurants around the area, she would rent a hotel room where she would, time and again, lure her son into performing sexual acts with her. Her reason for doing so she said, was to ascertain whether the fault was from her or not. At the end of April the result came out when she missed her period, signaling that she was pregnant.
But when she broke to her husband, what ordinarily would have been good news, he denied being responsible for it and suspected foul play. Stating February 1, 2018 as the last time they had sex together, he wondered how that would have resulted in pregnancy two months after. He added that if she missed her period at the end of April, then he is not responsible for it. This development led to suspicion that created a big crisis in the family. On 2nd August 2018, both of them submitted themselves to a medical test in Lafia based on the advice of a close relation. The result showed that Veronica is three months pregnant and confirmed the fact her last lovemaking with her husband February 1, couldn’t have led to that.
Another test conducted on her husband showed that he had weak and low sperm count that would make it impossible to father a child. The moment these details were released by the hospital, the angry husband, accusing her of infidelity, asked his wife to pack out of his house to go and live with the man responsible for her pregnancy.
Opening up on her own side of the story, the lady told Sun’s correspondent;
“I am not a loose woman,” she said. “I am just a woman who loves her husband very much and didn’t want to lose him. I did what I did to save my marriage even though I feel guilty about it. It was not easy but I slept with my first son from my first husband so that I could give my husband a child. But rather sustaining my marriage, the plan has scattered it and I have lost it.
“I got married to my husband eight years ago. We had no child. The worst was that I never got pregnant even for one day. When I discovered that I was no longer getting younger, I was worried as much as he and his parents were. His mother became so impatient that she started breathing down my neck as she gave me no breathing space at all. She said that I was cheating on her son, using his son’s money to maintain my son, that I’m older than his son.
“She moved in to live with us and practically made life in my matrimonial home unbearable for me. At a point, she stopped talking to me. The only time she would talk to me was when she wanted to insult me and remind me of how less a woman I was. I was confused, more so when my husband refused to submit himself to a medical test to ascertain the source of the problem, though we loved each other before the heavy pressure from his mum came. We used to have serious lovemaking sessions especially during my ovulation period all in the bid to get pregnant so that my mother-in-law could stop humiliating me. Yet, I couldn’t get pregnant. I started suspecting the problem could be from my husband when he refused to subject himself to medical test. But the insult from my mother-in-law was getting too much, too unbearable for me. She vowed to frustrate me out of her son’s home. To make things worse, she sent away my son saying that he has no business staying in the house. I had to look for a one-room apartment for him in Lafia.
“After he left, it was just three of us in the house in Awe, which is a distance away from Lafia. I was always terrified each time I heard her voice from a distance. She tried to frustrate my meat market in Awe. In fact, the only time that I had peace was when I went to the market. It is so agonizing to say this. Instead of testing someone else to ascertain my fertility, I seduced and slept with my son. Simon is a young man in his early 20s; he has not started sleeping with women before I lured him into making love with me.
“I started by buying good things for him, sleeping together on the same bed, playing with his manhood and gradually one thing led to another. There was a time I asked him if he had tested sex before and he said no. I compelled him to take an oath not to disclose it to anybody. I said I would teach him sex. I ensured that I did that during my ovulation period. I never disclosed the reason for this but deep in my mind, I wanted to test my fertility. I planned it during my ovulation so that I could get pregnant, although it was not easy sleeping with a son. I knew I was doing the wrong thing and betraying my husband but I saw it as a necessary action to save my marriage. I didn’t want to go out sleeping with another man outside. I knew it was wrong but I prefer it from my son than a man outside. After one month, I discovered that I was pregnant.”
The lady who asked her son to relocate to Benue State due to unforeseen circumstances, disclosed that she would do nothing else but piece together the pieces of her broken life and move on. When asked what she will do with her pregnancy, the lady who admitted she regrets her action, said she had decided to keep it because “it is blood within my blood.”
On his own part, Sebastian who vowed never to forgive his wife, said;
“I don’t want to believe the story she is narrating to you that her son is responsible for it, though I have not suspected her or seen any sign that an outsider was dating her,” he said. “But the truth is that I’m not responsible for the pregnancy and will not allow her into my house. It is a shame for me to be associated with a mess like this. Please, I don’t want to talk about it anymore; she is no longer my wife.”
Activists are concerned as a company involved in U.S lead poisoning bids to manage Lagos State water.
Veolia, the company linked with the Flint, Michigan massive lead poisoning, is on the shortlist to manage two-thirds of water system in Lagos.
Nayyirah Shariff, director at Flint Rising activist group, told BuzzFeed News.
“I feel Veolia is a snake, and they slithered over to Lagos to try to increase their profit margins,”
“They have a history of poisoning black communities in the US, and they should not be poisoning the largest African city on the continent.”
The campaigner said she was “shocked and extremely angry” when she found out that the French-owned water management company is among the three bidders for the Adiyan II project in Lagos.
Lagos suffers from lack of access to drinkable piped water and also has one of the highest child death rates from water-borne diseases. In hopes of improving the situation, local officials are considering partnerships with private companies from abroad.
The idea itself is controversial. Nigerian environmental and human rights NGOs are protesting against the privatization of the water sector, citing distrust of large multinational corporations and concern over government corruption.
They are drawing attention to high-profile controversies surrounding Veolia and the two other top bidders, Spanish company Abengoa and Dubai-based Metito, overseas.
The Emirati firm is linked to the Dakota Access Pipeline, which sparked protests from Native Americans, while Abengoa’s management caused protests and riots in Bolivia.
Veolia’s North American branch is currently being sued for its alleged role in water contamination in Flint, Michigan. The crisis, which started in 2014, caused massive lead poisoning, resulting in long-lasting health problems for residents.
Among the reported effects from drinking the water in Flint was a spike in fetal deaths and a dramatic deterioration in local children’s reading abilities. Activists fear Veolia’s involvement in Nigeria can end with a similar crisis, but on a larger scale and with more victims.

No fewer than 10 persons have been reportedly killed after an Edo state bank robbery yesterday.
Suspected gunmen on Thursday invaded the town of Igarra, in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State yesterday evening in an attempt to rob the Unity Bank and Keystone Bank branches in the area.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Johnson Kokumo, confirmed the attack which occurred Thursday evening.
The robbers are said to have first attacked the local police station close to the banks in a bid to demobilise the security operatives.
At the station, they shot and killed a policeman on duty along with two detainees. Three other persons outside the station were killed by the robbers.
The robbers also set the only vehicle on sight, a Toyota Hilux on fire before proceeding to attack the banks. The Hilux was the official vehicle of a newly posted area commander.
When the robbers got to the banks, at least four other persons were reportedly killed at the banks when the armed men could not gain access to the vaults of the banks.
Although sources said that the robbers found it difficult to access the vaults of the banks, it was not clear if they succeeded in carting away cash.
One of the residents, Ofei Obende, said that the youths tried to resist the robbers but were overpowered by their superior firepower.
Obende, however, noted that the daredevil robbers were later engaged in an exchange of gunfire by the police.
Police commissioner said three of the robbers were killed during the gun duel.
“I am intercepting messages; give me few minutes so that I can brief you. But the good news is we gunned three of the robbers down.”

National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomole announced Senator Godswill Akpabio as the new APC leader in Akwa Ibom State during the mega rally in Ikot Ekpene that saw the senator defecting into the ruling party.
Oshiomole described Akpabio as an uncommon transformer for pulling a mammoth crowd to the Ikot Ekpene Stadium.
“Today (yesterday) is historic in the life of our party (APC). For too long, when I was governor of Edo State, even now my successor, Godwin Obaseki, we have always said that in the whole of the Southsouth, it is only in Edo State that APC has a governor.
We are determined to find other states in the Southsouth to join forces with Edo State to sustain the changes that Nigeria badly requires”.
“There are people who are giving the impression that Akwa Ibom State belongs to them, but today, with what my eyes have seen (mammoth crowd), in February next year, the great people of Akwa Ibom State will effect a change, under the leadership of a man of honour, Akpabio, who did what other people failed to do, by saying enough of the umbrella that has been badly shattered by terrible political weather, after misruling Nigeria for 16 years.
What other people are afraid to do, Akpabio did it after deep reflection and he listened to the yearnings of his people, by sacrificing the title of Minority Leader of the Senate to join the APC. Akpabio did what Senator Bukola Saraki is unable to do and he has shown that the people of the Southsouth zone can be different, where it matters. We can stand up and be counted.
I know that with your (Akpabio’s membership of our great party (APC), we will benefit from your uncommon transformational qualities that you demonstrated while you were the governor of this great state. You (Akpabio) are an uncommon defector.
There are ordinary defectors, who want to move, but they want to steal the crown. We have an uncommon rally in Ikot Ekpene. “Akwa Ibom people are united that in 2019, under the leadership and guidance of Akpabio, this state will join the states of progressive governance.
